Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.2.6.4.3 - Use words suitable for purpose, audience, context and culture in relation to: type of texts (expository/explanatory, persuasive language, argumentative), medium (spoken/written), register (formal/informal) etc.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify whether a given piece of language is formal or informal and explain the clues that show this.
  2. Match suitable language choices to different purposes (expository, persuasive, argumentative) and audiences (teacher, friend, chief, younger sibling).
  3. Transform an informal spoken message into a formal written one, and vice versa, keeping the meaning the same.
  4. Demonstrate the use of appropriate register and vocabulary by role-playing a simple story set in a Ghanaian context.
  5. Explain why word choice must change according to context and culture, giving at least two original examples.
