Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.2.6.4.1 - Expand vocabulary stock through affixation

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Break down given words into their root, prefix and suffix components (e.g. unhappy = un + happy).
  2. Define a prefix as a word part added to the beginning of a root and a suffix as a word part added to the end of a root.
  3. Add common prefixes (un, re, dis) and suffixes (ness, ful, less) to roots to form new words.
  4. Use at least three newly formed words correctly in spoken sentences.
  5. Play the Affixes Game and explain how the words they formed change meaning when affixes are added.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Revise prefixes and suffixes by breaking down some common words into their roots- prefix/suffix components.
e.g. happy + ness = happiness un + happy + ness = unhappiness
- Guide learners to play games, e.g. Affixes Game. Write prefixes and suffixes on cards. Learners take turns to pick these from the basket or bag. If a learner is able to add a root to the prefix or the suffix and read out the word correctly, he/she keeps it. At the end of the game, the child with the largest number of cards wins the game.
- Learners may also work in groups to derive words using given prefixes and suffixes and using them in sentences.
