Learning Objectives
Indicator: B4.2.6.3.1 - Deduce meaning of words from how they are used in context e.g. near synonyms: cool - cold - freezing), homonyms: flour/flower
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify a word’s meaning by looking at the other words and sentences around it (context clues).
- Distinguish between near synonyms such as cool, cold and freezing by examining how each word is used in a sentence.
- Recognise homonyms such as flour/flower and explain how the same sound can have different meanings.
- Work in pairs and groups to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words from given sentences and short passages.
- Use context to choose the correct word (near synonym or homonym) to complete a sentence correctly.
