Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.2.6.3.1 - Deduce meaning of words from how they are used in context e.g. near synonyms: cool - cold - freezing), homonyms: flour/flower

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify a word’s meaning by looking at the other words and sentences around it (context clues).
Distinguish between near synonyms such as cool, cold and freezing by examining how each word is used in a sentence.
Recognise homonyms such as flour/flower and explain how the same sound can have different meanings.
Work in pairs and groups to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words from given sentences and short passages.
Use context to choose the correct word (near synonym or homonym) to complete a sentence correctly.
