Indicator: B3.2.6.1.2 - Use knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to interpret unfamiliar words

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five common prefixes (un-, re-, dis-, pre-, mis-) and five common suffixes (-ful, -less, -er, -est, -ly) in given words.
  2. Explain how a prefix changes the meaning of a base word (e.g., happy to unhappy, do to redo).
  3. Explain how a suffix changes the meaning or function of a base word (e.g., care to careful, play to player).
  4. Use their knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to work out the meaning of at least four unfamiliar words in a short passage.
  5. Build new words by adding prefixes and suffixes to base words and use them in their own sentences.
