  2. Form the simple past tense of regular verbs by adding “d” or “ed” (e.g., walk to walked, bake to baked, play to played).
  3. Rewrite present-tense sentences containing regular verbs in the simple past tense.
  4. Use at least three regular past-tense verbs correctly in their own sentences.
  5. Recognise that irregular verbs do not follow the “d” or “ed” rule and identify common examples (e.g., go to went, come to came).

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Regular e.g. play-played
- Revise main and auxiliary verbs by having learners identify them in sentences.
- Introduce learners to the concept of regular verbs:
- Regular verbs form their past tense by adding "d" or "ed"
e.g. play= played, walk= walked, bake= baked
- Elicit examples from learners and have them used sentences.
- The irregular verbs form their past tense differently. They do not add "d" or "ed".
- Provide a passage having regular and irregular verbs in the present tense.
- Learners rewrite the sentences in the past.
