SHS1 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 2, Week 17
UAV Applications
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.4.1.LI.1 - Examine the uses of military applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least four distinct classes of UAVs (fixed wing, multicopters, rotary wing, missiles) and state one military use for each class.
- Explain at least five military applications of UAVs, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR).
- Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of using UAVs in military operations, weighing ethical and strategic considerations.
- Evaluate a case study of a real-world military UAV operation and justify whether the mission achieved its objectives.
- Create a group presentation summarising the military uses of UAVs, demonstrating respect for diverse views and equitable participation.
This lesson builds on learners’ prior knowledge of UAV features (Week 13) and principles of operation (Week 14). It focuses exclusively on military applications, as civilian uses are scheduled for Week 18.

Experiential Learning: With the aid of audio-visuals, discuss military uses of UAVs. Invite a resource person who is military personnel to do a presentation on the military application of UAVs. Group Work/Collaborative Learning: - Let learners work in small mixed groups to summarise uses, etc. - Encourage female participation, respect and tolerance for views. Teaching and Learning Resources: - A brochure of the services offered by a UAV (drone) operator - YEAR TWO Assessment (1.4.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
