Learning Objectives

Indicator: K2.6.7.1.1 - Talk about different types of soil we find around us and which one is best used for gardening.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Name at least three types of soil found around them (sand, clay, loamy soil).
Describe in simple words how each type of soil looks and feels (e.g., sand is rough and loose, clay is smooth and sticky when wet).
State that loamy soil is the best soil for gardening because it helps plants grow well.
Talk about different ways we use soil in their community, such as building, moulding and planting.
Sing or say a short rhyme about soil with the class during circle time.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

* Say a rhyme or sing songs related to the topic.
* Follow basic procedures of the community circle time (as in K2.1.1.1.1) and introduce the theme for the week.
* Display a conversational poster and some concrete materials related to the theme, #19 and engage learners in active discussion on the theme. Interact and peers about the types of soil and the different ways we use soil (for building, moulding and planting)
* Talk about the types of soil and what we use them for e.g. Sand, Loamy soil and clay
Centre time: Look for good and fertile soil and prepare beds. Grow different types of plants and flowers on it and take care of the plants every day.
