Learning Objectives

Indicator: K2.2.1.1.3 - Identify the initial sounds in the name of every family member and clap the syllables in the names of the family members and other key words.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Say the name of each family member clearly and identify the first sound they hear at the beginning of the name.
  2. Match the initial sound of each family member’s name to its correct letter (for example, /m/ for mother, /f/ for father, /b/ for brother, /s/ for sister).
  3. Clap the number of syllables in the names of family members such as mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother and grandfather.
  4. Clap the syllables in other key words related to the family, such as family, baby, uncle and auntie.
  5. Say the initial sound of their own name and the names of at least three family members during a class activity.

Have learners mention the names of their family members. Teacher makes a list. Learners listen to the names again and say and identify the sounds that begins the names of their family members. The teacher helps them identify the letters that represent the sounds. Learners clap on the number of syllables in each name. Guide learners to identify the letter sounds of the family members. E.g. father -initial sound /f/, pays fees /p/ and /f/.
