Learning Objectives

Indicator: K2.2.1.1.6 - Solve word problems related to family using the concept of addition to find sums up to 10.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Listen to a simple word problem about family members and identify the numbers to be added.
  2. Use pictures of family members to count and add two groups of people up to a total of 10.
  3. Say and write the number sentence (for example, 3 + 2 = 5) to match a family word problem.
  4. Solve at least 3 out of 5 oral word problems about families, giving sums up to 10.
  5. Draw a simple picture of their own family and write the matching addition sentence.

Using pictures of different families, scaffold learners to add numbers up to 10 and finding how many people altogether live in a family.
e. g. if you add 3 learners and 2 parents it will give you 5 members altogether in one family.
Move gradually from use of word problems and number names to abstract addition of numerals (2+3=5)
