Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.4.LI.2 - Identify the basic skills in performing arm wrestling and tug of war.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the key skills required for performing arm wrestling and tug of war correctly.
  2. Describe how arm wrestling and tug of war are performed, including the grip, hand position, and body stance for each activity.
  3. Explain the importance of wrist positioning and body alignment for success and safety in arm wrestling and tug of war.
  4. Demonstrate the grip and stance for arm wrestling and tug of war through guided practice activities.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed-gender and mixed-ability groups to practise and evaluate the techniques of both traditional games.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Activity-based learning:
Arm wrestling Learners in pairs practice the grip, hand position and body position of arm wrestling. Learners in groups go through stations of activity involving timed matches to apply the skills and techniques acquired.
Tug of war In the same groupings, learners are shown the proper stance and how to grip the rope properly with both hands and thumbs wrapped around the rope. Learners practice simple pulling exercises with their group members.

Assessment (2.1.4.AS.2): Level 2: Describe how arm wrestling and tug of war are performed. Level 3: Explain the importance of wrist positioning in arm wrestling Level 3 : Demonstrate how arm wrestling and tug of war are performed.
