SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 2, Week 2

Tools and Machines in Woodwork Industry

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.4.1.LI.3 - Select and use appropriate machine for a specific woodwork operation

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least six woodwork machines (crosscut saw, circular saw, band saw, dimension saw, surface planer, thicknesser/combined surface planer and thicknesser) and name their main parts.
  2. Match each woodwork machine to the specific operation it performs, justifying their choice with at least one reason.
  3. Demonstrate the correct procedure for setting up and using one woodwork machine safely, following workplace ethics.
  4. Describe the basic care and maintenance routine for woodwork machines, including cleaning, lubrication and inspection.
  5. Explain the role of CNC woodworking machines in modern industry and compare them to manually operated machines.
