SHS1 Geography · Semester 1, Week 18

The Earth Atmosphere

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.3 - Calculate the annual and mean rainfall and temperature data of a station with appropriate instruments for measuring the various elements of weather

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Compute the annual rainfall total and mean monthly rainfall for a given weather station using GMet, TAHMO, or similar data sets.
  2. Calculate the mean (average) monthly temperature and annual mean temperature for a station from raw data.
  3. Identify the appropriate instruments used to measure each weather element (rain gauge, maximum and minimum thermometer, barometer, hygrometer, anemometer, and wind vane).
  4. Use the calculated rainfall and temperature values to determine whether a particular data set represents weather (short-term conditions) or climate (long-term averages).
  5. Present and explain their calculations and results clearly, both individually and in groups, using correct geographical terminology.

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Source document note

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • indicator text - the indicator code is printed 1.1.1.3LI3
  • exemplars - the assessment cell prints its four depth-of-knowledge headings but no assessment code; 1.1.3.AS.3 is supplied to match the indicator

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Project-based Learning: Using a 30-year weather data from a station (e.g TAHMO, GMet etc) or repository, learners calculate annual and mean rainfall and temperature data to differentiate between the terms weather and climate. Learners should be able to manage their emotional reactions and behaviours using techniques such as mindfulness strategies, breathing, and self-talk.

Assessment (1.1.3.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.

Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Video, pictures and diagrams of instruments for measuring the elements of weather and climate
- Weather station (e.g. GMet and TAHMO) or repository of elements of weather and climate data
