Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.1 - Sketch, label and describe the internal structure of the Earth

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Sketch a fully labelled diagram of the internal structure of the Earth showing the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core.
Describe the physical state, approximate thickness and key characteristics of each layer of the Earth’s interior.
Explain the relative temperatures and pressures within each layer and how they increase towards the centre of the Earth.
Compare the relative sizes of the layers, recognising that the mantle is the thickest layer and the crust is the thinnest.
Work collaboratively in mixed groups to present and justify their labelled diagrams to the whole class.

Talk for learning: Using videos or pictures and other resources, Learners in pairs discuss the components of the internal structure of the earth and share with whole class.
Activity-Based Learning: Using appropriate resources draw a well labelled diagram showing the internal structure of the earth. Learners in group discussions should not forget the emotions people attached to religious, political and ethnic issues.
