SHS1 Geography · Semester 1, Week 10
The Earth and Its Features
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.2 - Calculate distances using latitudes and time using longitudes
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Calculate the distance between two places on the same meridian (longitude) using the difference in their latitudes and the value of 1 degree of latitude (approximately 111 km).
- Explain the relationship between longitude and time, including the fact that the Earth rotates 15 degrees of longitude per hour.
- Calculate the local time at a given place when the time at another place of known longitude is provided.
- Apply the concepts of latitude-based distance and longitude-based time calculations to solve real-world problems involving places in Ghana and across the world.
- Work cooperatively in mixed-ability groups to solve distance and time problems using maps or atlases, respecting diverse viewpoints and contributions from all members.
Refer back to this indicator throughout the lesson to keep the focus on calculation skills.

Project-based learning: Using maps or other resources, and in manageable mixed ability groups, calculate distances using latitudes and time using longitudes. Learners should be firm and fair to resist inappropriate views that might override group's interest. Assessment (1.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Globe - Atlas - Maps - Google Earth - Bing or other free 3D-capable satellite images to facilitate your discussions on the definition and characteristics of latitudes and longitudes
