Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.1 - Use latitudes and longitudes to locate places on the earth’s surface

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define latitudes and longitudes in their own words and state at least two characteristics of each.
  2. Distinguish between latitudes and longitudes using a globe or atlas.
  3. Locate any given place on a map or globe when its latitude and longitude coordinates are provided.
  4. Read the approximate latitude and longitude coordinates of a named Ghanaian town or landmark.
  5. Explain why latitudes and longitudes matter for everyday activities such as navigation, trade and communication.

Exploratory Learning:
- Using a globe, atlas or other resources, brainstorm the definition and characteristics of latitudes and longitudes in an all-inclusive interaction including gender differences. Learners should be able to manage their emotional reactions and behaviours using techniques such as mindfulness strategies, breathing, and self-talk.
- With the aid of a globe, atlas, Google Earth or other resources, discuss the differences between latitudes and longitudes ensuring all learners are involved.
