The Earth and Its Features
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.2 - Examine the effects of the Earth’s rotation and revolution
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Distinguish between the rotation and revolution of the Earth, stating the time taken for each movement and the axis or path involved.
- Explain at least four effects of the Earth’s rotation on daily life, including day and night, time differences, deflection of winds and ocean currents, and the rising and setting of the sun.
- Explain at least four effects of the Earth’s revolution, including the seasons, variation in day length, the changing altitude of the midday sun, and the calendar year.
- Analyse, using critical thinking, how the Earth’s rotation and revolution together influence human activities such as farming, fishing, trading, and daily scheduling in Ghana.
- Demonstrate the rotation and revolution of the Earth through role play or model building, showing the direction, tilt, and path of the Earth.

Exploratory Learning: Prior to the lesson, research on the rotation and revolution of the earth from various sources such as books, the internet, library etc. Group work/collaborative learning: In mixed ability and GESI responsive groups, discuss the effects of the earth's rotation and revolution with the aid of pictures, globe, model etc, of the solar system. Learners should be firm and fair to resist inappropriate views that might override group discussions. Activity-Based Learning: Role play the revolution and rotation of the earth. Assessment (1.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Pictures/diagrams of the planetary system - Physical model of the planetary system (globe, from the computer or built one)
