SHS1 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 2, Week 5
The Aviation Profession and Operations
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.1 - Describe the various career paths in the aviation industry.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Name at least eight distinct career paths available in the aviation industry, including pilots, air traffic controllers, engineers, and ground staff.
- Match each aviation profession to its primary area of work (flight deck, air traffic control, ground handling, security, or maintenance).
- Explain the core function of each aviation profession in one or two clear sentences.
- Categorise aviation careers into at least three broad groups, such as flight operations, ground operations, and technical/maintenance roles.
- Work collaboratively in mixed groups to present findings on a chosen aviation profession, respecting the contributions of all group members.
This lesson focuses on describing the career paths themselves. The training pathways and qualifications for these careers will be examined in Week 6, and the detailed roles and how they interconnect will be covered in Weeks 9 and 10. Keep your teaching focused on identifying and describing the careers, not on the full training routes or detailed operational interconnections.

Talk for Learning: With the aid of audio-visuals, introduce the various aviation professions to learners (pilots, air traffic controllers, emergency services, luggage handlers, security officers, immigration officers, check-in assistants, engineers, maintenance and operation technicians/assistants). Learners choose or align with any of the aviation professions. In the profession groups, learners research and do a brief presentation on the training required to enter each role and their importance in the aviation supply chain. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Videos of aviation professionals at work, e.g., pilots flying an aircraft - Copies of job advertisements for aviation roles - ICAO Annexes - Copies of job advertisements for - aviation roles Assessment (1.3.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
