JHS2 Computing · Term 1, Week 6
Technology in the Community
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.1.2.1.1 - Discuss technologies that help to improve computer accessibility (adaptive and assistive technologies)
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least four categories of people with special needs and give a clear example of each.
- Define assistive technology and adaptive technology in their own words, and give one example of each.
- Describe how at least three assistive technologies (voice recognition, screen readers, screen enlargement) help people with sensory or mobility impairments use computers and mobile devices.
- Match specific assistive technologies to the particular needs they address (for example, screen readers for blind users, voice recognition for people who cannot use their hands).
- Speak clearly in a small group discussion to explain how one assistive technology works, using correct terms such as “input,” “output,” “sensor” and “feedback.”

Term 1, Week 6
(Week 6 of the year)
Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.
- Source document note
-
The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:
- sub strand name - printed 'INTHE' with no space. The JHS document never prints the spaced form, but NaCCA's own primary Computing curriculum names the same sub-strand 'TECHNOLOGY IN THE COMMUNITY' (b4/b5/b6-computing.csv). sub_strand_name becomes the lesson topic a teacher sees, so the missing space is closed.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Identify the categories of people with special needs. 2. Discuss technologies that can be used to help people with special needs (e.g. Computer software and hardware such as voice recognition programs, screen readers, and screen enlargement applications, to help people with mobility and sensory impairments use computers and mobile devices, etc.)
