SHS1 General Science · Semester 2, Week 15

Technology in Our Local Industries

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.4.2.LI.1 - Experiment to produce different types of soap.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Outline at least four key steps observed during a visit to a local soap production site and record them in a field trip report.
  • Explain the science of saponification using everyday language, identifying the reactants (fats/oils and alkali) and the products (soap and glycerin).
  • Carry out a simple laboratory or group experiment to produce one type of soap, following safety precautions and recording observations.
  • Compare the properties of at least two different types of soap produced (for example, hard bar soap versus soft soap) based on the ingredients used.
  • Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to research and present the science behind local soap making, using at least one digital or internet source.

Sub-strand
Technology in Our Local Industries (4.2)
Content standard
1.4.2.CS.1 - Demonstrate understanding of the process of local soap making and design methods of producing soaps for different purposes for income generation. 1.4.2.LO.1 Produce local soap in the community.
Indicator
1.4.2.LI.1 - Experiment to produce different types of soap. - Organise a visit for learners to a place where local soap is produced and observe the processes of production. Write a report on the processes involved. - Putting learners in mixed-ability groups, let them search the internet, brainstorm/thinkpair-share on the science in the process (Saponification) of local soap making.
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 15 (Week 35 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.
