Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.2.2.2.1 - Determine and analyse central and supporting ideas of texts

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Read a short passage and identify the central (main) idea in their own words.
  2. Locate the topic sentence in a given paragraph and explain why it is the topic sentence.
  3. Identify at least two supporting details in a paragraph and explain how each one relates to the main idea.
  4. Write a one-sentence summary of a short text that captures the central idea without copying the topic sentence word for word.
  5. Exchange summaries with a partner and give one piece of helpful feedback on whether the central idea is clearly captured.
