SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 15

Substructure and Superstructure

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.3 - Discuss methods of excavating foundation trenches

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain the purpose of excavating foundation trenches and why correct dimensions matter for the stability of a building.
  2. Identify and describe at least four different methods of excavating foundation trenches, including hand digging, manual tools, mechanical excavation and controlled blasting where applicable.
  3. Discuss the factors that influence the choice of excavation method, such as soil type, depth of trench, size of project and available equipment.
  4. Select appropriate tools, plants and equipment for excavating foundation trenches under given soil conditions and justify their choices.
  5. Demonstrate safe working practices and proper trench support procedures when excavating foundation trenches on a construction site.

Communication: Organise whole Class and ask learners to explain excavation of foundation trenches.
Collaboration: In mixed ability groups ask learners to discuss methods of excavating foundation trenches.
Collaboration: In mixed-ability groups ask Learners to discuss tools, plants and Equipment used in excavating foundation trenches.

Assessment (2.3.2.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.

Teaching and Learning Materials:
- Use of Simulation; Virtual to illustrate setting out.
- Use of Flip Chat to illustrate excavations.
- Use of Simulation, Virtual and Typical foundational works as seen in progress at different Construction sites to discuss various types of foundations given the soil type.
- The use of Simulation; (virtual) to illustrate types of load-bearing and non-load bearing members of the superstructure.
- The use of Superstructure works as observed at different Construction sites to illustrate the use of load and non-load bearing members.
- The use of flip-charts to illustrate types and functions of load-bearing and non- load bearing members of the Superstructure.
