Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.4 - Describe Decentralization, types, and structure of Ghana’s local government system.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define decentralisation and distinguish between devolution, deconcentration and delegation as the main types.
  2. Explain the rationale for adopting decentralisation in Ghana’s governance system.
  3. Describe the structure of Ghana’s local government system, from the Regional Coordinating Council down to the Unit Committee.
  4. Assess the relationship between decentralisation and democratic consolidation, building on earlier lessons on the Electoral Commission and political parties.
  5. Demonstrate the values of transparency, patriotism and commitment when discussing the role of local government in national development.
