Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.1 - Apply basic skills in performing individual and team sports (e.g., pickleball - Service and reception in pickleball).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Demonstrate the correct grip and stance for executing a legal pickleball serve.
  2. Perform the underhand serve technique with control, keeping the ball low over the net.
  3. Apply proper positioning and paddle angle to receive a serve effectively.
  4. Describe the conditions under which a player scores a point during a serve or reception in pickleball.
  5. Explain the serving order in doubles pickleball and apply it correctly during practice games.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group based learning: Learners in mixed ability groups practice the various types of grips for service, showing how to hold the paddle firmly, demonstrate how the grips are used it for different shots.
Activity-based learning: In small groups with different skill levels, learners practice the serve technique with shadow swings without the ball.
Take learners through a guided practice on ball control the pace and keep how to keep the ball low over the net, demonstrate positioning and paddle angle for effective drop shots.

Assessment (3.1.2.AS.1): Level 1: Describe the conditions under which a player can score a point in pickleball. Level 2: How is the serving order determined in pickleball? Level 3: Demonstrate how to serve in pickleball.
