Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.8 - Apply basic skills in performing individual and team sports (e.g., volleyball - reinforcement of underarm serve and digging reception in volleyball).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe the correct technique for performing the underarm serve and digging reception in volleyball, naming at least three key points for each skill.
  2. Demonstrate the underarm serve with correct stance, ball toss, arm swing and contact point, sending the ball over the net at least 4 out of 6 attempts.
  3. Demonstrate the digging reception with correct ready position, platform formation and controlled contact, receiving the ball accurately to a target area at least 4 out of 6 attempts.
  4. Apply the underarm serve and digging reception in a paired partner drill across the net, maintaining continuous rally for at least 4 consecutive exchanges.
  5. Evaluate their own performance and that of a partner using a simple skills checklist, identifying one strength and one area for improvement in each skill.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group-based learning: Learners demonstrate the skills learnt in the previous lesson. Learners in pairs stand on opposite sides of the net, serve the ball to the partner who then serves it back. Learners practise the digging reception by hitting the ball to their partners in succession.
