SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 18

Solid Geometry

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.2 - Draw the curve of intersections of solids of different sides and meeting at different angles.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the curve of intersection on models and charts showing a square pipe meeting a cylindrical pipe at an angle other than 90 degrees.
  2. Explain, in their own words, why the curve of intersection between a square pipe and a cylindrical pipe is not a straight line when the pipes meet at an angle.
  3. Apply the principles of projecting points from the plan and elevation views to construct the curve of intersection between a square pipe and a cylindrical pipe meeting at an angle of 60 degrees.
  4. Construct the complete curve of intersection for a given square and cylindrical pipe problem using drawing instruments, with accuracy in projection lines and curve smoothness.
  5. Justify the correctness of their constructed curve by checking that projected points align on all three views (plan, elevation, and end view).

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 18 (Week 18 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Managing talk for learning:
1. With the use of videos and pictures review learners' knowledge on intersections from year two through group activities and help them to explain the curve of intersections of square and cylindrical pipes of different sides meeting at different angles
2. Demonstrate the construction of curves of intersection of square and cylindrical pipes of different sides meeting at an angle other than ninety degrees (90°) using appropriate drawing instrument

Activity based learning: Help learners to draw the curve of intersection of given pipes using drawing instrument

Assessment (3.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
