SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 17

Solid Geometry

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.1 - Draw the curve of intersections of solids of the same sides meeting at different angles.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain what a curve of intersection is and describe how it appears when two square or two cylindrical pipes of the same size meet at an angle.
  2. Identify the key features of a curve of intersection (the line of contact, the seam, and the angle of meeting) on given models and pictures.
  3. Draw the curve of intersection of two square pipes of the same sides meeting at an angle other than 90 degrees using drawing instruments.
  4. Draw the curve of intersection of two cylindrical pipes of the same diameter meeting at an angle other than 90 degrees using drawing instruments.
  5. Compare the curves produced by square and cylindrical pipes meeting at the same angle and state at least one difference between them.

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 17 (Week 17 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Managing talk for learning:
1. With the use of videos and pictures review learners' knowledge on intersections from year two through group activities and help them to explain the curve of intersections of square and cylindrical pipes of the same sides meeting at different angles
2. Demonstrate the construction of curves of intersection of square and cylindrical pipes of the same sides meeting at an angle other than ninety degrees (90°) using appropriate drawing instruments.

Activity based learning: Help learners to draw the curve of intersection of given pipes using drawing instrument.

Assessment (3.2.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
