Silent Reading

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.2.8.1.1 - Read silently and reasonably for meaning from level-appropriate texts

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Read a level-appropriate passage silently without moving their lips or pointing at words.
  2. Use pictures, illustrations and surrounding text clues to understand the meaning of what they read.
  3. Summarise the main idea of a silently read passage in their own words.
  4. Answer simple who, what, where and when questions about a passage they have read silently.
  5. Discuss with a partner how reading silently helps them understand a text better than reading aloud.

This lesson focuses on the skill of reading silently for meaning. It builds on previous weeks where learners practised reading aloud with accuracy and expression. The lesson does not yet teach vocabulary in context (Week 6, Indicator B4.2.8.1.2) nor full comprehension questions (Week 6, Indicator B4.2.8.1.3), but it prepares learners for both by helping them read quietly and grasp the general meaning of a text.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Learners read silently making reference to pictures, illustrations, etc. to make meaning of texts. Encourage learners to do independent work. Note: You may guide learners with questions to do this.
