Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.3 - Prepare oxygen and discuss its uses.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Describe the physical properties of oxygen gas (colour, odour, solubility in water, density relative to air) based on observations from demonstrations.
- Demonstrate, through guided hands-on activity, the laboratory preparation of oxygen gas using hydrogen peroxide and manganese(IV) oxide as catalyst, and describe the method of collection (downward displacement of water).
- Write a balanced chemical equation for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to produce oxygen gas.
- Test for the presence of oxygen gas using a glowing splint and describe the expected observation.
- Discuss at least five uses of oxygen in everyday life, including medical, industrial, and environmental applications, and relate these uses to the gas’s properties.
