SHS2 General Science · Semester 1, Week 1

Science and Materials in Nature

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.1 - Differentiate among acids, bases and water.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the defining properties of acids, bases and water based on taste, touch and reaction with indicators.
  2. Classify common household and laboratory liquids as acidic, basic or neutral using litmus paper.
  3. Conduct a simple group experiment to test the pH of given liquids, recording observations accurately in a table.
  4. Explain, in their own words, the differences between acids, bases and water using at least two characteristic tests.
  5. Justify why water is described as neutral while acids and bases have opposing properties, using evidence from their observations.
