SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 16

Safety, Quality and the Environment

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.3.LI.2 - Analyse the effects that manufacturing activities have on the environment (e.g., the effects of waste disposal, power consumption, destruction of the environment)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three types of manufacturing waste and explain how each affects the environment.
  2. Describe how power consumption in manufacturing contributes to environmental degradation, including the role of fossil fuels and energy efficiency.
  3. Analyse at least two examples of environmental destruction caused by manufacturing activities in Ghana and propose a mitigation measure for each.
  4. Categorise manufacturing environmental effects as either positive or negative based on a given scenario.
  5. Evaluate the waste management practices of a local manufacturing industry and relate them to environmental safety using evidence from a field visit or case study.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning: Embark on a field trip with learners to local manufacturing industries and let them find out about the waste management system; types of raw materials used and products of that industry and relate their findings to environmental safety.
Talk for Learning: Lead learners to discuss the positive and negative activities of various manufacturing activities on the environment.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * MSDS Samples * Supplementary materials
- * Internet access. * Educational field trip to a local manufacturing industry
Assessment (2.3.3.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
