SHS1 Geography · Semester 1, Week 14

Rocks, Weathering, Soil and Mass Wasting

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.3. Evaluate the three weathering processes (physical, chemical and biological weathering processes)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Distinguish between physical, chemical and biological weathering by describing the key mechanism of each process.
  • Explain at least two specific agents of weathering under each of the three categories, using local examples where possible.
  • Analyse a weathering scenario in the environment and correctly identify which type(s) of weathering is at work, justifying their reasoning.
  • Evaluate the relative importance of the three weathering processes in different Ghanaian environments (for example coastal, forest and savanna zones).
  • Assess the effects of weathering on human activities such as farming, construction and road building in Ghana, making reasoned judgements.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for learning: Using questions and answers, discuss the types of weathering processes, ensuring all participants are involved.
Experiential Learning: In mixed ability groups embark on a field tour around the school compound or neighbourhood to observe the types of weathering and weathering processes in the environment and make presentation and/or a written field report. Learners should create an environment in which others believe that their thoughts and opinions are valued.

Assessment (1.1.2.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.

Teaching and Learning Resources:
