SHS2 Robotics · Semester 1, Week 11

Robot Control Principles

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.1 - Analyse scenarios and derive mathematical models for implementing continuous-time machines.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the key components of a continuous-time control system (input, output, error, controller, plant) from a written scenario.
  2. Analyse a given automation scenario to determine whether error detection and correction or error avoidance is the appropriate control strategy.
  3. Derive the error detection and correction equation (error = setpoint - measured output) for a continuous-time system described in a scenario.
  4. Formulate error avoidance equations (predictive correction) for scenarios where disturbances must be anticipated before they occur.
  5. Justify the choice of a control equation for a specific automation requirement using logical reasoning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Initiating Talk for Learning: Introduce learners to the principles of continuous-time system automation for "error detection and correction" and "error avoidance". In pairs, learners analyse the given requirements of automation systems and formulate the "error detection and correction" and "error avoidance" equations required for automation. Pairs share their findings with the class for comments.

Assessment (2.1.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
