Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.1 - Explain the concepts of parenting and parenthood.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define parenting as the application of techniques, methods, and skills in raising a child.
  2. Define parenthood as the state of being a parent.
  3. Differentiate between parenting and parenthood, citing at least three clear differences between the two concepts.
  4. Give at least two examples of parenting practices common in Ghanaian homes and explain what makes them examples of parenting rather than parenthood.
  5. Justify, in a short discussion, why both parenting and parenthood are necessary for a child’s proper upbringing.

General Learning Approach: In the context of schools with large sizes, the RMEC team should utilize case studies, video watching (movie scenes), drama/role play that will offer opportunities for discussions afterwards.
Where appropriate the following pedagogies may also be implemented:
Inquiry-Based Learning: Prior to the lesson, work in groups to find the meanings and differences between the concepts, parenting and parenthood from the internet and other sources.
Digital Learning: Create word clouds with the concepts of parenting and parenthood.
