SHS3 Biomedical Science · Semester 2, Week 18
Research and Design in Biomedical Science
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.4.1.LI.2 - Design and analyse an experimental study to answer a question relating to human health
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Formulate a clear, testable research question relating to human health within their local school or community setting.
- Design an experimental study by identifying the independent variable, dependent variable, control group, and sample size for their chosen research question.
- Collect and organise primary or secondary data into a simple table or chart suitable for analysis.
- Apply at least one statistical measure (mean, percentage, or simple comparison) to analyse their collected data and draw a conclusion.
- Present their findings in a short written report that includes the research question, method, results, and conclusion.

Project-Based Learning: Learners work in groups, proposing a research topic (for example, BMI of learner population, the effect of skipping breakfast on mood, blood pressure profile of learners, etc), designing an experiment for the proposed research and collecting experimental data. Consult textbooks and online resources for secondary data for the study. Finally, document your findings in a report. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Projector - Internet - Textbook - Sample - Regulatory - manual documents Assessment (3.4.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
