Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.4.1.LI.2 - Use online search engines and journal databases to locate reliable scientific articles.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three credible online sources for scientific and biomedical information, including journal databases, and explain why each is reliable.
  2. Construct an effective search query using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and quotation marks to narrow results on a search engine like Google.
  3. Distinguish between a scholarly journal article and a non-scholarly webpage by examining at least four features of the source.
  4. Locate and retrieve a full scientific article on a given Ghanaian healthcare topic from a recognized journal database such as PubMed, Google Scholar, or AJOL (African Journals Online).
  5. Evaluate a located scientific article for credibility using a simple checklist of authorship, publication date, peer-review status, and citations.
