SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 2
Rapid Prototyping
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.2 - Build a prototype using available technologies.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify a real community problem or need and translate it into a design brief with clear specifications.
- Select an appropriate rapid prototyping technology (solid-based, liquid-based, or powder-based) for a given design, justifying their choice.
- Construct a physical prototype using available materials and technologies in the school workshop or classroom.
- Test their prototype against the design specifications and document the results.
- Present their completed prototype to the class, explaining the design process, the technology used, and lessons learned from feedback.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Project-Based Learning: - Learners in mixed-ability groups identify a problem or need in the community, design a solution, and prototype a physical model using available rapid prototyping technologies. - Learners present their prototypes in class and receive feedback. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Library resource - Textbooks - Internet access - Projectors - Audio visuals - RP Technologies Assessment (3.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
