SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 3
Rapid Prototyping
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.2 - Use AutoCAD to create 2D and 3D models.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Launch AutoCAD and set up a new drawing workspace with the correct units and limits for a given component.
- Create accurate 2D geometric models of simple manufactured components using drawing and editing commands taught in earlier lessons.
- Convert a 2D profile into a 3D model using the Extrude or Presspull command.
- Apply visual styles and basic viewing tools (Orbit, Zoom, Shade) to inspect 3D models from multiple angles.
- Save, share, and present their 2D and 3D drawings to the class and respond constructively to peer feedback.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Experiential Learning: Learners to create and edit 2D and 3D drawings using AutoCAD. Share drawings with the rest of the class for comments. Project-Based Learning: Learners individually produce 2D and 3D models of components for manufacture, share their drawings and receive feedback. Encourage learners to tolerate and respect comments. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Textbooks - Library - Computer laboratories - Licensed AutoCAD software Assessment (2.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
