SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 1, Week 7
Properties of Materials
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.1 - Explain the mechanical properties of a bamboo material.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define the four main mechanical properties of bamboo: compressive strength, hardness, tensile strength, and flexural strength, in their own words.
- Explain how the structure of bamboo (nodes, hollow internodes, and fibres) contributes to each mechanical property.
- Compare bamboo’s mechanical properties with at least two other common materials (such as steel, timber, or plastic) and state one practical advantage of bamboo in each comparison.
- Rank the mechanical properties of bamboo in order of relative strength based on research findings, and justify the ranking with evidence.
- Predict how bamboo’s mechanical properties might change under different conditions, such as moisture content or age at harvest.

Research-Based Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups research on the mechanical properties of bamboo (such as compressive strength, hardness, tensile strength, and flexural strength) and discuss their results in class for feedback. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Textbooks - Library resource - Internet access - Tensile test machine Assessment (3.1.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
