Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B4.1.10.1.1 - Demonstrate awareness of the features of spoken language (contractions, ellipsis e.g. A: How are you? B: Fine)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify contractions (such as can’t, shouldn’t, I’m, we’ll) in short spoken dialogues and state the full forms of each contraction.
  2. Explain what ellipsis means in spoken language, using the example of a short answer such as “Fine” in response to “How are you?”
  3. Form contractions correctly from given pairs of words (e.g., do + not = don’t, will + not = won’t).
  4. Use ellipsis appropriately in short spoken exchanges by giving complete answers in full form first, then shorter spoken versions.
  5. Role-play a short conversation that includes at least two contractions and one example of ellipsis, demonstrating awareness of natural spoken English.
