Learning Objectives

Indicator: B1.2.1.2.3 - Say the new word when asked to delete, add initial sound or substitute an initial, middle or final sound (Phoneme deletion, addition, substitution)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Delete the initial sound of a given spoken word and say the new word that remains (e.g. say “brat”, delete /b/, say “rat”).
  2. Add an initial sound to a given spoken word and say the new word formed (e.g. say “all”, add /b/, say “ball”).
  3. Substitute the initial, middle or final sound of a given spoken word and say the new word formed (e.g. change “cat” to “bat”, “bat” to “bet”, “bet” to “bell”).
  4. Identify which sound (initial, middle or final) was changed when the teacher gives a word pair such as “pin” and “pen”.
  5. Play sound games with classmates by giving and following instructions to delete, add or substitute sounds.

e.g.
- phoneme deletion: brat= rat, etc.
- phoneme substitution: cat=bat, bat = bet, bet=bell, etc.
- phoneme addition: all =ball, etc.
