Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.1.3.1.1 - Respond to poems by discussing their central messages and expressing own opinion

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Recite a simple grade-level poem with actions, correct stress, and a steady rhythm.
  2. Identify the subject or topic of a poem after listening to or reading it.
  3. State the central message of a poem in one or two clear sentences.
  4. Express their own opinion about a poem, giving at least one reason for their view.
  5. Clap or tap out the rhythm of a poem to show their understanding of its beat.

This lesson opens the Poems sub-strand and the topic for Term 1, Week 1. It focuses on listening, reciting, and responding to a poem. Learners will practise discussing what a poem is about and what message it carries. The later slots in this sequence will move on to relating poem values to daily life (B5.1.3.1.2) and then composing poems (B5.1.3.1.3), so this lesson stops at responding and sharing opinions only.
