Plants - 1

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: K2.6.5.1.4 - Recognise and read 25% of sight words instantly and automatically

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Recognise and read at least 25% of the sight words introduced so far in the term (about 8 to 10 words from the class word bank) instantly, without sounding them out.
  2. Identify sight words related to the plants theme (such as “good”, “to”, “sister”, “dad”, “come”, “he”, “she”, “in”, “the”, “mom”) when they see them on a grid, flashcard or word wall.
  3. Play the Practice Ladder sight word game in small groups, taking turns, following rules and reading words aloud correctly.
  4. Match spoken sight words to their printed forms during group games and teacher-led activities.
  5. Work collaboratively in a team to read sight words quickly and score points for their group.

This lesson sits within the plants theme. Learners have already talked about parts of plants and their uses (K2.6.5.1.1), built vocabulary and created an LEA text (K2.6.5.1.2). Now they will practise automatic recognition of sight words, which will help them read the LEA text fluently in later lessons (K2.6.5.1.3) and support blending work in K2.6.5.1.5.
