Learning Objectives
Indicator: B5.1.2.2.3 - Experiment with available relevant visual arts media and methods to create own visual artworks that reflect topical issues in Africa
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three topical issues currently affecting Africa (such as plastic waste, deforestation, or water scarcity) and name one visual artwork they could create to reflect each issue.
- Select and justify the use of at least two available materials and tools from their local environment for creating an artwork that reflects a chosen topical African issue.
- Demonstrate experimentation with at least two different media or methods (for example, papier mâché, collage, painting, or construction) before settling on one approach for their final artwork.
- Create an original visual artwork that clearly communicates a selected topical issue in Africa using appropriate methods and skills.
- Present their finished artwork to peers, explain the topical issue it addresses, and give and receive constructive feedback through jury and peer review.

Learners are to: - explore the local environment to select available materials and tools that are good for making artworks; - study and experiment with available materials and tools to create simple artworks that reflect the emerging topical issues in Africa using appropriate methods and skills e.g. - clay, plasticine, papier mâché (paper pulp), etc. for modelling and casting; - straw, yarn, paper, etc. for weaving; - odds and ends for constructing and assembling; - brushes and paint for painting; - craft tools for perforating, shaping and punching; folding and shaping paper to make origami and quilling; - spatula and scooping tools for modelling; - needle for sewing, etc. - discuss and share their experiences through jury and peer review; - use available materials in the environment to make artworks similar to the works studied; - discuss and compare their artworks to the artworks studied.
