Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.2.2.3.3 - Create own performing artworks based on own ideas, knowledge and understanding of artworks that reflect topical issues in Africa

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three topical issues currently affecting African communities and explain why they matter for performing arts creation.
  2. Select one topical issue and generate at least three original ideas for a short performance (music, dance, drama or poetry) that expresses that issue.
  3. Plan a short group performance by assigning roles and choosing suitable available instruments, props, costumes and production techniques.
  4. Rehearse and present an original 2 to 3 minute performing artwork that clearly communicates a chosen topical issue to the class.
  5. Reflect on their own and peers’ performances using simple criteria such as clarity of message, creativity, use of voice or movement, and teamwork.

Learners are to:
- demonstrate basic knowledge and skills in the use and application of the elements and principles of performing arts, instruments, equipment and techniques freely in creative and expressive ways to produce own music, dance, drama, poetry etc. based on own ideas and experiences;
- make own compositions based on reflective memory of current topical physical and social issues in Africa;
- produce music, dance, drama etc. based on own skills, talents and experience by selecting and using available but suitable and appropriate: a) instruments, elements, resources, equipment available (e.g. xylophone, drums, flutes, bells, shakers, rasp, finger piano, rattles, clappers, castanets, horn, whistles, harp, costumes, props); b) manual/mechanical/electronic production methods/techniques (e.g. voice, gestures, movements, language, improvisation, imitation, adaptation, guided writing skills to communicate feelings, melodic, rhythmic, harmonic and dynamic elements, dramatization); c) props, scenery, and costumes for different styles and performances which support and enhance the intent of a production.
