Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.1.2.2.2 - Experiment with available relevant visual arts media and methods to create own visual artworks that reflect the physical and social environments of some African communities

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three available materials in their local environment that can be used to create artworks reflecting African community life.
  2. Experiment with at least two different media (such as clay, paper pulp, straw, paint, or odds and ends) to discover their properties and suitable methods for working with them.
  3. Create one original artwork that clearly shows a feature of the physical environment (such as a river, mountain, baobab tree, or compound house) or social environment (such as a market scene, festival, or family gathering) of an African community.
  4. Explain in one or two sentences how the materials and methods they chose helped them express their chosen African community scene.
  5. Discuss their own artwork and give helpful feedback on a peer’s artwork during a simple class jury and peer review session.

Learners are to:
explore the local environment to select available materials and tools that are good for making artworks
- study and experiment with available materials and tools to create simple artworks that reflect the physical and social environments of some African communities using appropriate methods and skills: e.g.
- clay, plasticine, papier mâché (paper pulp), etc. for modelling and casting;
- straw, yarn, paper, etc. for weaving;
- odds and ends for constructing and assembling;
- brushes and paint for painting;
- craft tools for perforating, shaping and punching;
- folding and shaping paper to make origami and quilling;
- spatula and scooping tools for modelling;
- needle for sewing, etc.
- discuss and share their experiences through jury and peer review;
- use available materials in the environment to make artworks similar to the works studied;
- discuss and compare their artworks to the artworks studied.
