Learning Objectives

Indicator: B3.2.2.2.2 - Plan to create own artworks that represent performing arts in other communities in Africa, by experimenting with available instruments, resources and techniques for producing performing artworks that reflect the natural and manmade environments in those areas in Africa

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Experiment with at least three available instruments or sound-making resources to discover which ones best represent the natural environment (e.g. wind, water, birds) of a chosen African community.
  2. Experiment with at least three available instruments or sound-making resources to discover which ones best represent the manmade environment (e.g. drums, bells, talking drums) of a chosen African community.
  3. Select and justify two or more instruments or resources for a planned short performance, explaining how each choice reflects the environment of the chosen African community.
  4. Draw or write a simple plan showing the sequence of a short performance (music, dance or drama) that represents the natural and manmade environment of an African community other than Ghana.
  5. Present their plan to a partner or small group, explaining how their choices connect to the history, culture and environment of the chosen community.

Learners are to:
- experiment with available instruments/elements, resources and techniques to determine their nature, suitability and safety in order to compose and perform music, dance or drama that reflect other cultures in Africa;
- talk about the history and culture (e.g. their beliefs, customs, religion, festivals) of the people from other parts of the Africa;
- Try out some music, dance and drama compositions performed by people from other parts of Africa (Dances: Indlamu of South Africa, Moribayasa of Guinea, Eskista of Ethiopia, Atilogwu of Nigeria, Aduma of Kenya; Music: Afrobeat of Nigeria, Highlife of Ghana and Azonto).
