SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 12

Plane Geometry

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.3 - Construct the types of arch and their applications in real life situation.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain what an arch is and identify at least five common types of arches from pictures, models, or environmental observation.
  2. Construct accurate drawings of the semicircular, segmental, and pointed (Gothic) arch using compasses, set squares, and drawing instruments.
  3. Construct accurate drawings of the equilateral and lancet arch forms using geometric construction methods.
  4. Design an original arch suitable for the door of a chapel, applying appropriate arch types and drawing it neatly with correct instruments.
  5. Justify the choice of a specific arch type for a given real-life application (for example, bridges, doorways, or windows) based on structural and aesthetic reasons.

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 12 (Week 12 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Initiating talk for learning and Research: With the use of pictures, videos, environmental observation and internet surf engage learners in small groups and in a whole class discussion to come out with the explanation of arches and outline the common types of arches

Project- based learning, Activity based learning: Guide the learners individually to design an arch that can be used on the door of a chapel and draw it using appropriate tools and instrument

Activity based learning:
1. With their knowledge in blending of circles and lines with arcs help learners through demonstration to draw types of arches using the appropriate drawing instrument.
2. Guide the learners individually to design an arch that can be used on the door of a chapel and draw it using appropriate tools and instrument

Assessment (3.2.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
