Learning Objectives

Indicator: B1.2.2.1.3 - Understand the relationship between spelling of words and sounds of speech

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Sound out individual letters in short words and blend the sounds to read the word correctly.
Segment spoken words into their individual sounds and identify the letters that represent those sounds.
Match at least five spoken words to their correct written forms based on the sounds they hear.
Give at least two examples of their own words that follow the same sound-spelling pattern, such as words ending in “at” or “am”.
Work with a partner to build and read simple words by combining letter sounds.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Blend vowel sounds with consonant sounds to produce words,
e.g. am, at.
- Let learners segment the sounds in the words and blend them by using blending games.
- Ask learners to give examples of words.
- Write the words and have learners sound the individual letters and blend them to produce words.
- Have learners work in pairs/groups to further practise sound segmentation and blending to produce the words.
