Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.1 - State and describe properties of transition elements and perform an experiment to investigate some properties of transition elements.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and name the first-row transition elements (Sc to Zn) from the periodic table and state the general electronic configuration of transition elements.
  2. Describe at least five characteristic properties of transition elements: variable oxidation states, paramagnetism, complex ion formation, coloured compound formation, and catalytic ability.
  3. Demonstrate experimentally that manganese(IV) oxide catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, and explain the role of the catalyst in the reaction.
  4. Perform an experiment to show that insoluble copper(II) salts dissolve in excess dilute ammonia due to complex ion formation, and explain what happens.
  5. Construct models of tetrahedral, square planar, and octahedral complex shapes using local materials and name the complexes from their formulae.

Exploratory Learning: Conduct an experiment to explain the applications of complex formation by causing waterinsoluble species to dissolve by converting them into soluble complexes. E.g., insoluble Cu 2+ salt in excess dilute ammonia.
Collaborative Learning
- Discuss and use molecular models or materials from the environment to create shapes of some common complex compounds (tetrahedral, square planar and octahedral) from given formulae.
- Draw and name the complex compounds modelled.
