SHS3 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 6

Pattern Design

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.3.LI.1 - Select appropriate drawing materials and tools that can be used to create 3-dimensional free hand-drawn templates and patterns.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least eight different drawing materials and tools used for creating 3-dimensional freehand templates and patterns, stating the specific purpose of each.
  2. Classify drawing materials and tools into categories (drawing instruments, cutting tools, and modelling materials) based on their function in the template and pattern design process.
  3. Justify the selection of appropriate materials and tools for a given 3-dimensional template and pattern project, considering factors such as the nature of the object, available resources, and safety.
  4. Demonstrate correct and safe handling of at least three selected tools while producing preliminary freehand sketches for a 3-dimensional template project.
  5. Collaborate effectively in mixed-ability groups to brainstorm, select, and present a materials and tools list for a chosen 3-dimensional template and pattern design idea.

Content standard
3.1.3.CS.1 - 3.1.3.CS.1 Demonstrate knowledge and skill in using freehand drawing techniques to create 3-dimensional templates and patterns for objects and concepts. 3.1.3.LO.1 Apply the understanding and skills of creating templates and patterns to develop freehand-drawn 3-dimensional templates and patterns for objects and concepts.
Indicator
3.1.3.LI.1 - Select appropriate drawing materials and tools that can be used to create 3-dimensional free hand-drawn templates and patterns.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 6 (Week 6 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work/Collaborative Learning: In mixed-ability groups: learners brainstorm to come up with ideas for drawing freehand templates and patterns. This could be a theme, an object or an idea, and what the 3-dimensional template and pattern drawing is for; e.g. objects, forms, gadgets, vehicles, etc.

Group work/Collaborative Learning; Project-based Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups develop many small sketches and drawings based on their ideas to see which ones could work as 3-dimensional templates and patterns.

Problem-based learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups identify and select appropriate materials and tools, such as pencils, pens, markers, saws, knives, blades, cardboards, wood board, foam, styrofoam, etc. for their free hand-drawn 3-dimensional template and pattern projects.

Assessment (3.1.3.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
